Well I am back from my trip to Florida. It was a blast! I went for the APHON (Association for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses) Conference. I was pretty excited about going because I knew that I was going to learn so much. And I did! We had several sessions a day, some were general sessions and others where specific (I got to choose which topics I wanted to go to). It was really nice going after working in the inpatient and outpatient settings, because I could understand and learn from both perspectives. Anyways I won’t bore you with all that. So I was excited about going for the learning part, but I did not even think I was going to get to go to Disney World and I did!! We stayed at the Coronado Springs Resort at Disney. One morning we had time, so me and 2 other nurses Katie and Heidi went to a character breakfast at the Grand Floridian. It was fun to see the characters, but a little weird without kids. I was fine with the characters that were in the suits, because you could not see their face. But when Alice (from Alice in wonderland) came up to our table and started talking in character I was a little weirded out. ha ha I know I am weird, but it is awkward. So that was fun, then on Friday night after we were done with our sessions we went the Magic Kingdom for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. This was so cute! The entire park was decorated for Halloween, all of the characters and employees were in costumes, and the kids were all in costumes and got to go trick-or-treating around the park. Of course we rode all the rides and went trick-or-treating too! It was so nice to get away and have so fun like that. Work has been hard lately and there is just something therapeutic about screaming on a roller coaster. So I hope I get to go next year, I don’t know if it will be as much fun since it is in Minnesota, but you never know.
Heidi breakin’ it down to Hanna Montana!
Nathan and Heidi did a great job on their poster they presented!
We also got to tour the Give Kids The World Village. This place is amazing! I have heard so much about it from my patients, this is where they stay when they go to Disney World. It is so much more than a place to stay! It was started by a man named Henri Landwirth. I will give you the short version of the story, because he has an interesting life. But he had a hard childhood, separated from his parents and sister when he was 13 and sent to a Nazi death camp and his parents died when he was 18. Several years later he successfully owned and operated hotels. Well there was a girl named Amy who had Leukemia and her wish was for her and her family to go to Disney world. She contacted Henri and asked him if her family could stay at his hotel during their trip to Disney and he said of course! Amy’s travel plans took to long to arrange and she passed away before she could get her wish. So that was when Henri started the Give Kids The World Village, where these families get to stay, eat, play for free! GKTW along with many “wish” foundations work to get these kids to Disney World. They have an ice cream shop, movie theater, tons of toys, carousel, swimming, and they even celebrate Christmas weekly (with Santa, snow, presents, etc.). It is an amazing place and a great organization to donate to if you are interested. Here is their website for more information www.gktw.org
I hope everyone has a great week!
